Stationed as consul on the West African outpost of Fernando Po (modern-day Equatorial Guinea), the British adventurer Richard Burton (1821–1890) decided to explore the area, which he wrote about in this two-volume work, published in 1863. Volume 1 recounts his time with the Egba people.
