Beskrivelse

English Natural science, law, theology and health, social studies and humanities in one and the same publication is a rare sight. However, that is what can be seen in the anthology Der må da være en grænse! (One has to draw the line somewhere!). The book begins with a discussion of the moral evaluation of modern technology, including a philosophical discussion of whether it is the duty of morality to draw the line when it comes to modern technology. The modern scepticism of (bio)technology is analyzed and is regarded as being politically rather than religiously substantiated and, in continuation of this, an article discusses the conditions to which a biotechnical discussion is subjected in a pluralist society. The moral discussion is followed up by a more judicially based angle on the problem which focuses on the legal regulation of a large number of moral discussions of biotechnology, and moreover, the many problems connected with the use of gene tests are looked into. From biotechnology, the discussion is turned on to the field of information technology and includes an analysis of the importance of information and communication technologies for the future democratic development. The last two contributions in the book deal with the horror scenario often seen in connection to attitudes towards modern technology: Will mankind eventually be replaced by machines? Fritz Lang's film Metropolis from 1926 is analyzed and it is established that the evil of technology is not the technology itself, but rather the premodern and prescientific elements that the technology must be cleared of before it can become acceptable. The collection of texts is of a both scientific and debating nature and caters for readers with a general interest. Kasper Lippert-Rasmussen (b. 1964) is a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Oxford and since 2000 a senior lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Copenhagen.Hardback versionPaperback versionForlagets emneord: Filosofi og psykologi - Samfundsvidenskaberne og politik - Bioteknologi - Demokrati - Love - Naturvidenskab - Politik - Teknologi - Computere - Etik og moral - Filmanalyse - Genetik - Mentalitetshistorie - Sundhedsvæsen - Dansk
