Captain Coram's Foundling Hospital was established in 1739 for 'the maintenance and education of exposed and deserted young children'. John Brownlow (1800–73), himself a foundling, was secretary of the hospital from 1849 until his retirement. This work, first published in 1847, presents a valuable insider account of the hospital.
