Darwin's 1865 study of the mechanics of climbing plants shows the development of his ideas about adaptation and environment. Inspired by the work of the botanist Asa Gray, Darwin examined a variety of plants and was fascinated by their different methods of climbing: by twisting stem, leaf, tendril or root.
