This compilation of Maori oral literature was commissioned in 1879 by the New Zealand government to help preserve indigenous traditions. The ethnographer John White (1826–91) collected the texts and provided accompanying English translations. Volume 4 (1888) focuses on the Tainui migration and on the legendary ancestor Paoa.
