First published in 1893, this memoir recounts the experiences of two English nurses who volunteered to establish a bush hospital in Umtali (now in northern Zimbabwe). Blennerhassett and Sleeman walked through the bush for two weeks to reach their destination, remaining for two years and often working without a doctor.
