The astronomer John Lee (1783–66) inherited Hartwell House in Buckinghamshire in 1827, building there an observatory designed by his friend William Henry Smyth (1788–1865). Smyth's illustrated account of Hartwell - this first volume appeared in 1851 - illuminates both the history of the estate and the practice of contemporary astronomy.
