Beskrivelse

The point of gravity of this volume on Danish sculpture lies with two of Thorvaldsen´s followers, namely H.E. Freund and J.A. Jerichau. Through their works one may observe the changes of style in sculpture during the last century, from Neo Classicism to a more dynamic artistic expression where the movements of the body as well as human emotions are rendered.
Freund´s experiments in using a classicistic language for subjects from Norse mythology are among the most important and exciting innovations of the period. Jerichau won international renown for The Panther Hunter which departed from classicistic ideals with its dramatic realism. Carl Jacobsen aimed to complete the picture of Danish sculpture of the 19th century with his own collection, which became sequel to the one at Thorvaldsen´s museum.
