Joseph Ennemoser (1787–1854) practised medicine in Germany and became a leading figure in the field of 'animal magnetism' and hypnosis, which had recently been popularised by Franz Anton Mesmer. This 1842 publication focuses on 'magnetic' phenomena including visions, and probes the connections between the physical world and religion.
