The German surgeon Emil Bessels (1847–88) was head of the scientific team on the American-sponsored Polaris Expedition to the Arctic in 1871–3. In this illustrated 1879 work, written for a popular audience, he describes the explorer's hazardous experiences in Greenland and presents key scientific data from the expedition.
