The geologist John Milne (1850–1913) became interested in earthquakes while teaching in Japan, and became part of a team that built the first seismograph capable of recording major earthquakes. This 1886 publication is a thorough analysis of earthquakes and seismic phenomena, their causes and effects, as then understood.
