Louis Agassiz (1807–73), one of the foremost scientists of his day, took up the study of glacial geomorphology in Switzerland in 1836. When he published his revolutionary glacial theory in this work of 1840, he greatly undermined the hypothesis that landscape features were the result of a great biblical flood.
