Sodom and Gomorrah is the fourth volume of Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time (1913-27), one of the most important novels of the twentieth century.
The fifth volume of Proust's In Search of Lost Time focuses principally on the protagonist's relationship with Albertine in Paris. The Captive, however, is no conventional love story. Proximity and intimacy breed anxiety and suffering on account of the protagonist's jealousy.
