Samfundslitteratur er dedikeret til at gøre læserne klogere ved at udgive fagbøger og undervisningsmaterialer, der henvender sig til studerende, undervisere og forskere. Deres udgivelser anvendes på tværs af mange fagområder og uddannelsesniveauer, fra professionsuddannelser og universiteter til efteruddannelser og gymnasier. Blandt deres populære titler findes bestsellerne Den gode opgave, Mørkelygten og Moralsk stress.
Grundlagt i 1967 af en gruppe studerende, er Samfundslitteratur stadig tro mod sin oprindelige mission om at gøre viden tilgængelig gennem økonomisk overkommelige studiebøger. Overskuddet fra forlaget anvendes til projekter og initiativer, der forbedrer det faglige og sociale studiemiljø på videregående uddannelser i hele landet.
Hvert år uddeler forlaget Lærebogsprisen, Danmarks største faglitterære pris på 100.000 kroner, som en del af deres engagement i at fremme kvalitetsfaglitteratur.
Samfundslitteratur er en del af nonprofitorganisationen SL-fonden, der også driver boghandlerkæden Academic Books med seks butikker i Odense og København. Forlaget omfatter tre aktive forlag: Forlaget Ajour, Kompendieforlaget og Nyt fra Samfundsvidenskaberne, samt tre mindre aktive: Roskilde Universitetsforlag, Biofolia og Copenhagen Business School Press.
