Despite a frustrated ecclesiastical career, Giraldus Cambrensis (Gerald of Wales, c.1146–1220/23) composed many literary works, including in volume 6 treatises on his native Wales, which revived the classical tradition of the ethnographic monograph. The Latin text, with an editorial preface in English, was published in the Rolls Series in 1868.
