Leicester Stanhope played a controversial role in the struggle for Greek independence. In 1823, the London Greek Committee sent him as its agent to Greece, but his paternalistic view of the Greeks led to resentment, and he was recalled. This 1824 account was published to deflect criticism of his conduct.
