The traveller and archaeologist Sir Charles Fellows (1799–1860) made several trips through Asia Minor. This is his journal of the first, during which he discovered ancient cities which were unknown to contemporary Europeans. First published in 1839, this illustrated work fuelled the British Museum's interest in acquiring Anatolian antiquities.
