Mannheim-based music publisher Emil Heckel (1831–1908) founded the first Wagner Society in 1871 to raise money for the inaugural Bayreuth Festival. This 1899 work, prepared by William Ashton Ellis (1852–1919), charts the festival's development through translations of Heckel's memoirs and Wagner's letters to his friend.
