George Eliot (1819–80) was possibly the greatest of the Victorian novelists. This biography by her friend, Eton master and historian Oscar Browning (1837–1923), published in 1890, offers an affectionate account of her literary and social achievements, as well as some of the more controversial aspects of her life.
