The London medical researcher William Carpenter (1813–1885) set out to challenge the growing public belief in spiritualism, something he saw as 'epidemic delusions'. In these two lectures, published in 1877, he considers the historical and scientific contexts of occult practices including mesmerism, thought-reading and clairvoyance.
