The publications of the Hakluyt Society (founded in 1846) made available edited (and sometimes translated) early accounts of exploration. This volume contains the earliest surviving Western description of Ethiopia, written by the Portuguese missionary Francisco Alvarez (c.1465–c.1540) and first published in English in 1881.
