Clergyman, schoolmaster and writer on aesthetics, William Gilpin (1724–1804) published a series of works recording his observations on the picturesque across British landscapes. This work of 1804 describes a journey made in summer 1774 along the south coast of England, taking in Portsmouth, Brighton, Dover and Canterbury.
