In this 1801 publication, French zoologist Lamarck (1744–1829) presented his classification system for invertebrates, dividing them into seven classes based on their natural characteristics. The work also includes Lamarck's theory of evolution, called 'soft inheritance', where organisms pass down acquired traits to their offspring.
