In the latter part of the nineteenth century, European powers embarked on determined expansion into Africa. The geographer John Scott Keltie (1840–1927) wrote of the 'scramble' at the time, publishing in 1893 this authoritative work on the subject, here reissued in its revised and augmented second edition of 1895.
