Written in 1827 by the most influential technical author of his generation, and possibly of the nineteenth century, this is one of the earliest historical surveys and explanations of the steam engine. Through his many writings, Thomas Tredgold (1788–1829) contributed greatly to the wider understanding of civil engineering.
