An elderly artist and her six-year-old grand-daughter are away on a summer together on a tiny island in the gulf of Finland. As the two learn to adjust to each other's fears, whims and yearnings, a fierce yet understated love emerges - one that encompasses not only the summer inhabitants but the very island itself.
It’s such a quiet summer book that perfectly encapsulates the enjoyment of undisturbed routines and solitary living, although never lonely. The characters are written with so much love that they seem so very real in my head. The lack of an age determined hierarchical system among the characters on the islands is also noticeable and greatly appreciated. Sophia being a kid (and the only kid) doenst make her less than - although she might have other interests or dreams or fears, it doesn’t make her less than. The same goes for the slightly cross and very imaginative grandmother.
I really enjoyed this book.
