Moncure Conway (1832–1907), the free-thinking preacher, was acquainted with many figures in the literary world. He published this unauthorised memoir of his friend after Carlyle's death in 1881, because he was concerned about the damage J. A. Froude's biography, with its frankness on personal matters, might do to Carlyle's reputation.
