French explorer, author and legislator Gabriel Bonvalot (1853–1933) received funding from the French government to lead expeditions to Central Asia in the 1880s. This 1889 work is an account of the second Asian expedition. In Volume 1 the expedition is detained upon entering Afghanistan, and sent back to Samarkand.
