In 1856, Polish writer and poet Karol Edmund Choiecki (1822–99) took part in a North Sea expedition organised by Prince Napoléon. In 1857, Choiecki published a lyrical account of the journey via Scotland, Greenland and Scandinavia. It offers a welcome contrast to the scientific accounts of his day.
