The world-famous Danish furniture designer Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) is best known for creating hundreds of chairs and other furniture designs, but he also left behind a range of watercolours and drawings. The subjects are mainly furniture and interiors, supplemented by images of applied art objects, woodwork and wallpaper patterns, as well as a number of studies of nature, landscapes and people. This book focuses on those watercolours, thereby taking a fresh look at Wegner’s world: in addition to being a designer with a great love of the practicalities of joinery, he also possessed a more playful, artistic vein, a great urge to express himself and a fine sense of colour.
The book considers Wegner’s artistic endeavours in the context of the period and his personal history, presenting almost a hundred watercolours arranged by subject matter. It concludes by outlining Wegner’s life and work in a richly illustrated biography.
The author, Anne Blond (b. 1976), is an art and design historian with a particular interest in Hans J. Wegner. She is director of Foreningen Museum Wegner, an association responsible for establishing a museum dedicated to Wegner’s furniture in Tønder.
