Alcide d'Orbigny (1802–57) was a respected French palaeontologist whose work was admired by Darwin. Originally published in 1836, this lightly fictionalised account describes his South American travels between 1826 and 1833, supplemented by information from other sources. This 1859 edition was updated for inclusion in Furne's four-volume collection.
