The major work of Herbert Spencer (1820–1903), philosopher, biologist, sociologist and political theorist, was his ten-volume System of Synthetic Philosophy, which offers an ethics-based guide to human conduct. Spencer regarded this book, published in 1879, as the culmination of his life's study of human behaviour, social evolution and morality.
