Leslie Stephen (1832–1904), the English author and literary critic, began researching what he later called his 'utilitarian bog' in the late 1870s, though this three-volume examination of English utilitarianism was not published until 1900. Volume 2 examines James Mill (1773–1836) whose writings influenced the dissemination of utilitarianism.
