Suffering from ill health, geologist and naturalist Henry Baker Tristram (1822–1906) first travelled to Algiers in search of a warmer climate. From there, he soon pushed on into the Sahara. Originally published in 1860, this is one of the first accounts of the South Sahara to appear in English.
