The diplomat and M.P. William Hamilton (1805–67) was also a keen geologist and a protégé of Sir Roderick Murchison. This prize-winning two-volume work, published in 1842, describes his 1835 journeys through Asia Minor, researching both the geology and the archaeological sites of an area then little explored by Europeans.
