This compilation of Maori oral literature was commissioned in 1879 by the New Zealand government to help preserve indigenous traditions. The ethnographer John White (1826–91) collected the texts and provided accompanying English translations. Volume 6 (1890) describes wars between Maori factions and against Europeans, and also documents ritual genealogies.
