This six-volume work on the history and philosophy of Sikhism, published in 1909 by Max Arthur Macauliffe (1841–1913), a former deputy commissioner of the Punjab, is considered his magnum opus. Volume 4 covers the lives and compositions of Hargobind, Har Rai, Harkrishan and Tegh Bahadur, the sixth to ninth Sikh gurus.
